7 WWW.HEALTHSYSTEMMGMT.COM REGULATORY GUIDELINES 21ST CENTURY CURES ACT — The House and Senate approved the 21st Century Cures Act, an expansive measure that increases funding for research into cancer and other diseases, boosts access to mental health treatment and combats the opioid abuse epidemic in the U.S. The $6.3 billion bill will provide the National Health Institute (NIH) up to $4.8 billion in additional funding over 10 years as well as provide $500 million in funding for the FDA and approximately $1 billion in grants to states to combat prescription drug addictions. TRUMP ADMINISTRATION — A new post-presidential election survey from Aprima Medical Software shows a majority (55%) of healthcare professionals are optimistic that physician practices will experience a decrease in regulatory burdens. Most of the 312 physicians and practice staff participating in the survey (52%) believe a Trump presidency will improve healthcare in the U.S., while 48% anticipate a positive financial impact on their practice. Respondents were divided in terms of the potential impact on provider compensation models, and on patient access to care. SCIENCE OF CYBERSECURITY — The National Science Foundation announced $76 million in research grants through its Secure and Trustworthy program to study the scientific, engineering and socio-technical aspects of cybersecurity. The grants support 241 projects across 36 states and 129 institutions, and touch on all aspects of the field including hardware, software, network security, human incentives and behaviors, and the integration of computation with the physical world. The program is aligned with the Federal Cybersecurity Research and Development Strategic Plan, two new plans for protecting and preserving the growing social and economic benefits of cyber systems while ensuring security and privacy. $76 MILLION IN RESEARCH GRANTS SUPPORTS LATEST ADVANCEMENTS 241 PROJECTS 36 STATES 129 INSTITUTIONS
