5 WWW.HEALTHSYSTEMMGMT.COM EDITORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM MANAGEMENT | DECEMBER | 2016 UNWANTED GUESTS It’s the holiday season — a time for family celebrations, the giving of gifts to loved ones and the arrival of welcome visitors. But some visitors are not welcome — in your home, or in your healthcare workplace. Ideally, hospitals and healthcare practices are sanitary, hygienic places free of any pests. But that is not necessarily always the case. Despite the best efforts of all concerned, insects, rodents and other unwanted “guests” find their ways in to your operating rooms, nurse stations, business offices, ERs and, worst of all, patient rooms. This problem presents serious risks to patient health by spreading bacteria, disease, skin irritations, allergens as well as possibly But some visitors are not welcome — in your home, or in your healthcare workplace. causing psychological issues. But infestation also can impact your patients’ healthcare experience, and worse yet, their perception of their stay. And in this age of social media-driven oversharing, the last thing you want to get is a “bad review” from a guest, correct? We are here to help, and hopefully help is what will be provided by our cover story this issue, “Integrated Pest Management: What You Need to Know.” In it, Ron Harrison, PhD, an experienced exterminator who is the director of technical services for Orkin LLC, presents an innovative new method for systematically dealing with, and eliminating, pests in your workplace. The integrated pest management (IPM) method Harrison presents in his article is a targeted approach in which you take proactive measures to prevent such infestations before they happen, and before you’d have to resort to spraying chemicals in your facility, which is never ideal in a sterile environment such as yours. Another cool thing about IPM initiatives is that they can be customized based on your facility’s layout, building conditions and even time of year. We’re delighted to be able to present fresh approaches to old problems such as this one in these pages. And as we approach year end with this, the publication of our final Health System Management for 2016, I’d like to thank all of the authors who have contributed to our publication since our kickoff in June. And most of all, I’d like to thank you, our readers, for making this inaugural year such an enjoyable and rewarding experience. We appreciate your feedback on our social media sites, your engagement with our online content, and your participation as contributing authors for our monthly issues. We look forward to continuing to serve you in 2017 and beyond. Happy Holidays!
